Yesterday, it was decided that we would make a recovery attempt on a CSIRO oceanographic mooring located about 260 nautical miles to the south west of Tasmania in about 4600m of water.
This mooring was damaged early last year in a storm and the top section broke away leaving some valuable scientific instruments at the bottom of the sea floor. This morning, we arrived on site by 6am and started the process of locating and raising the remains of the mooring. Eventually the equipment was found 4 nautical miles to the north-west and we sent down the commands to release it.
Unfortunately, nothing came to the surface and we eventually located the equipment suspended at a depth of 920 metres. It appears that the weight of the equipment is too great for the floats to lift it entirely off the sea floor.
Either that or a giant squid has found a new friend.
We will do some further work to further pinpoint the location the equipment for possible future attempts before leaving the area.
