At 11pm (UTC+7) last night, we decided to cease ice breaking and make the ship ready for cargo discharge. We didn't get in as far as we would have liked but the weather is looking good, we are close enough to pump fuel and getting started seems like the best option.
It has been a long hard slog through 3.8 nautical miles of fast ice to get to this point. Several times during the process my computer was predicting an estimated time of arrival as "infinity days". The fast ice has been unusually flexible which has made it a lot harder to break and we have been bogged down a few times requiring re-ballasting of the ship to get free. Luckily when we leave Davis, it will be a lot quicker.
This morning, vehicles from station are busy extending the ice road leading from shore. All parties are checking the integrity of the ice around the ship and we hope to begin unloading cargo later today. The Deputy Voyage Leader has just been seen ferrying a large box of chocolates around the vessel so you know something big is about to go down.
Welcome to the Riviera!
