We had a very productive day yesterday. We managed to unload all of the cargo to shore and managed to start back loading RTA (Return to Australia) cargo to the extent that we have managed to fill Lower Hold No 1 and are now onto Lower Hold No 2. This is particularly satisfying as we had to relocate all of the science equipment sitting on top of Lower Hold No 2 and quite a bit of shuffling was required. The wind came up at 6pm and we had to shut down the shore crane but even this was perfect timing as the very last container that came on board allowed us to close up the forward lower hold and then get the cargo shuffle happening. The wind that started at 6pm steadily rose to the point where we had to take the inflatable boat off the water and we managed to finish up the operation using the AA2 workboat to ferry the last people back to the ship.

And this morning? It is blowing 60 knots (gusting to 70) and we can’t see the station which is only a few hundred metres away. I just spoke to the Mawson Station Leader and she can’t see us either. So the index of intrepidness has risen considerably this morning. Cargo operations are unthinkable. We briefly considered sending the refuelling supervisor ashore with the fuel hose between his teeth but abandoned the plan after working through the risk assessment.
Meanwhile the crew are taking the opportunity to conduct safety drills and watch some informative training videos.

Tomorrow will be a better day. A rest is no bad thing.
