Overnight we sailed off the eastern edge of BANZARE Bank and now have 4600 metres of water under the keel. The water temperature jumped a full degree as we entered deeper water so this is literally a hotspot. Day 29 finds us steadily trawling towards way point 0703 with yet another MIDOC trawl out. Last night we did number 25 also known as the Silver Jubilee MIDOC.
Our Senior Krill Enthusiast and bon vivant, Rob King, is a proud man this week. The female krill that we caught a while back have begun to spawn in the maternity ward rather ominously known as “Lab 5”. Rob has been heard whistling “A Little Ray of Sunshine” and reckons he can hardly wait to subject the new arrivals to certain scientific experiments involving carbon dioxide. At the same time, Christine has found some pteropod eggs so there must be something in the water. Well, if there is; we’ll find it.
As mentioned yesterday, our scientific “furthest “north” will be reached today after which we will begin zig-zagging our way back to the 60th parallel. There are a number of low pressure zones coming our way and, while we seem to have dodged the worst of them, in this part of the world you can run but you can’t hide for ever. Should be bumpier over the next 48 hours.
