Overnight we completed our 450 mile long, leg 6 and are now into leg 7 which is 155 nautical miles long on an almost easterly course. This will take us to the most northerly point of the science transect at a latitude of 57° 37’. This leg takes us off the Banzare Bank and back into the deep waters of the abyssal plain.
Yesterday’s MIDOC trawl excited our 2nd mate, Naomi who discovered several new species in the trawl net. These creatures appear to be perfectly adapted to their environment being camouflaged to look like flakes of paint from the Aurora Australis trawl ramp
We are currently doing another MIDOC trawl at the stately speed of 2.5 knots as we continue to carve out a rather scrappy, 500 mile long figure of 8 in the southern ocean.
Happy Regatta day to those in Hobart. Not many yachts to see out here. The visibility is down to about 5 miles and it’s been snowing lightly.
