Comments

The wind has picked up slightly to around 40 knots but is now coming more from the starboard. It’s still slow going out here but we grind onwards.

Our gear officers are busy on deck carrying out modifications to the MIDOC trawl system. They are adding cameras that will allow us to see how the equipment operates underwater as well as sewing on nets. It’s wet work as we keep careful watch for rogue waves coming over the trawl deck.

The iceberg sweep was begun today allowing expeditioners to nominate 15 minute periods in the next 4 days when we see the first iceberg. All proceeds raised will go Camp Quality. The rules for this competition are both arbitrary and time honoured. The berg must be bigger that the ship, seen with the naked eye and the winning time is judged by the officer of the watch to be when the ship passes the iceberg. We are still only at latitude 55 degrees south and the possibility of seeing icebergs this far north is small but real.

Clocks will go back 1 hour again tonight; emphasising that we are inexorably moving further away from home; both in space and time.
