Things are somewhat lumpier this morning. We are pounding into a head wind which has slowed us down a little and the outlook for improved conditions looks rather bleak for the next week or so.
We completed the MIDOC deep water trawl deployment yesterday and the fish team had a pleasant time sorting the various small sea creatures that we had caught at 200m intervals between 800m and the surface. We commenced a CTD (Conductivity Temperature Depth) operation immediately afterwards but had to quickly abandon it due to worsening weather conditions.
Looks like we may not get any more trial deployments done before we reach the study area but we were very pleased to have deployed and retrieved the MIDOC system as this particular version of the equipment has never been used on Aurora Australis before.
We’ve almost knocked off the roaring forties; the furious fifties await us.
