Comments

We awoke to a pleasant day on the southern ocean. We ran the Continuous Plankton Recorder overnight and also made a southerly course change to avoid some a weather system. We’ll probably be doing a little bit more zig-zagging on the way down. This morning we deployed the MIDOC trawl system for the first time. This net system is deployed to depths down to 1000 metre and samples the biota at 5 different depths on the way back to the surface. This morning, we managed to get the net down to 800 metres and we are retrieving it at the moment. (which is why we are currently only doing 3 knots)

We plan to do a CTD (Conductivity Temperature Depth) deployment later this afternoon. These test deployments are providing a very useful shakedown of our systems prior to embarking on an intensive marine science program next week.

All on board are thinking of the team at Davis at this very difficult time.
