The ship has been gently wiggling it’s way through the heavy broken ice floes heading to the open sea. It is quite fascinating watching the ice floes move as we push them out of the way and into other floes. It is like a competitive dance and depending on how tight the pack is which floes ends up on top of or below another. When a floe is broken apart by the ship large chunks will turn over and you can see how thick they are, how much snow is on top and how much algae is on the bottom. Sadly this is likely to come to an end in a couple of days as we sail closer to the ice edge.
The thick coating of ice that was all over the ship yesterday has started to melt. There are some locations on the ship where you need to take extra care so that pieces of ice falling off rails etc as they thaw do not fall on you.
Yesterday many took the opportunity to catch up on rest as resupply operations are very busy. Our sights now turn towards our return to Australia and finalising documentation relating to the resupply.
