A good day for discharging cargo yesterday. We were able send all the priority cargo that was stowed on the deck of the ship. Included in this cargo was ‘reefers’ (refrigerated containers) set at +4 for fresh food and -18 for frozen food and Mawson cargo. This was priority so it could go to Davis to enable cargo loads to be prepared ready to fly to Mawson.
Weather is the determining factor in all activities in Antarctica and we need to be prepared so any weather window that occurs can be taken advantage of.
Under the watchful eye of Adelie penguins cargo continued today. The Adelies also took a keen interest in the refuelling operations this morning as the laying out of the fuel hose and preparations both on the ship and shore were undertaken. We are soon to commence the leak testing of the hose and if all is ticked off pumping will commence later this afternoon. We have almost 1,000,000 litres of Special Antarctic Blend (SAB) to pump ashore with an expected refuelling operational time of about 40 hours.
It is a gorgeous day here – perfect blue sky and little wind.
Cheers Leanne and Mick
