Yesterday afternoon King Neptune appeared looking exceptionally regal with his faithful servants in tow. After chastising Voyage Management for not seeking permission to travel his seas he proceeded to anoint 52 expeditoners into his kingdom. Group by group they were summoned before his majesty to determine if they were of the right stuff to travel his ocean. All passed muster and are now South Polar Sea Dogs. They are ‘true and trusted salts’ taking pride in the brine that courses through their veins.
One of the truly special experiences on board the Aurora Australis is a trawl deck barbecue. The temperature was a pleasant -3.5 degrees and from the smiles and laughing that permeated the air everyone enjoyed the event. It is pretty amazing eating a steak sandwich watching ice floes and icebergs go past. Thank you to the crew for making this happen.
Environmental briefings were held today for all on board who are going ashore at Davis. All are briefed on the importance of preventing the introduction of ‘alien species’ to Antarctica and the possible impact if this does occur. Two DVDs are shown - one ‘Keeping Your Distance from Wildlife” “Take it New or Take it Clean”, showing how to clean your boots, clothing and equipment. This is then followed up with actually cleaning your gear. If you do not go through this process you are unable to leave the ship and go to station.
Amongst all this planning continued to occur for our arrival at Davis – hopefully in a couple of days.
Cheers Leanne and Mick
