Last night the trivia contest lived up to expectations and was a huge success. There were 12 teams, some with very dubious names. The competition was tight all night but the eventual winners were Webby’s Angels. We had a fun night and raised money for Camp Quality – a great way to spend a Friday evening.
We entered the pack ice during the night and we are currently travelling through patches of ice with icebergs appearing more regularly. Looking out of my porthole I can see many expeditioners on the bow of the ship taking photos and video. It is an interesting sight as we are all issued with yellow and black windproof outer shells so it looks like a swarm of brightly coloured bees. Seeing the ice for the first time always reinvigorates people after being on a rolling ship for 10 days and getting a good night sleep last night helped.
A briefing on Sea Ice Travel was held for the cargo team that will be driving vehicles and working on the sea ice during resupply. At Davis we undertake an over ice resupply – which means that cargo is discharged from the ship onto vehicles and then driven ashore to the station. A series of roads is constructed ship to shore – 1 for pedestrians, 1 for the refuelling operation and an in road and out road for cargo transport.
The emergency muster was held this morning. These are held regularly to test the response time of all on board and ensure the appropriate cold weather clothing is worn in the event of an emergency.
We also turned our clocks 1 hour last night which means we are now on Davis time and 4 hours behind Hobart.
Cheers Leanne and Mick
