Comments
As forecast the weather progressively deteriorated today until the seas started building in the 40 to 50 knot winds. We conducted observations outside at first but soon retreated to the shelter and warmth of the bridge.
The acoustics team heard blue whales throughout the day but all were to our south and east where we knew there was a thick ice. We steamed northeast heading for possible open water indicated by our ice charts.
By late in the day the singing blue whales were directly south of us but the weather and poor visibility excluded the option of going into the ice. Tomorrow's forecast is for low wind and calm seas so after daybreak we will be able to assess whether the ice is sufficiently open for our ship to enter and find the blue whales.
