The acoustic mooring was deployed in Terra Nova Bay yesterday evening and early this morning we left the bay as more ice was blown in. We had a relatively easy run out with few wide bands of thicker ice floes.
Again today we only recorded a few sightings of minke whales – we had hoped to see more pods of killer whales close to the coast but not this time.
It’s now blowing over 40 knots and the seas are rising. We are keeping the seas and swell on our port quarter for a smoother ride as we had back northeast. We hope to find another silverfish mark to run an experiment with the echosounders. This would also involve trawling just above the sea floor but only when if weather improves.
Most of the blue whales are still calling to our northeast. One whale was calling to our southeast, deep within the Ross Sea. Had we had more time it would have been great to track down that whale. Since the whaling era sightings of blue whales in the southern Ross Sea are very rare.
