We have now started the trawl survey in the northern Ross Sea. There is still plenty of broken first-year pack ice in this area so it has been a day of slowly finding leads in the ice to reach the marks and then gauging whether there is sufficient ice free water to trawl. Before each trawl the seabed is a mapped with the multibeam sounder to assess whether the net is likely to get hooked up on uneven ground.
Two trawls have been completed and one produced the only whale sighting for today - in the form or a partial whale skull from the sea floor. We will send images of the specimen to museum colleagues who should be able to identify the species.
