Last night and today we have been steaming towards the trawl survey location inside the Ross Sea. To enter the Ross Sea we went west and then south until we hit a relatively narrow band of thick but broken pack ice. We slowly nudged our way through the ice until breaking through into the open water. Recently we crossed 70oS.
Generally a quiet day but we had beautiful views across the ice to distant, dark snow storms. Only humpback whales have been identified today but other than whales we have also seen Antarctic, snow and mottled petrels, southern giant-petrels, adelie penguins, and also crabeater and leopard seals.
