Comments

Overnight we ran another acoustic survey for krill and once complete we found another blue whale by tracking its calls. We conducted a focal follow to describe its behaviour and then approached for photographs and to collect a biopsy sample. This same pattern was repeated later in the day with a pair of cruising blue whales. The photographs showed the three whales we encountered today were new to this voyage but it will take time to compare them to images in the full Antarctic Blue Whale Catalogue. Again a krill survey will be conducted overnight and if multiple marks are found then we may conduct a mid-water trawl.

The teams working on the observation deck and the bow of the ship had to wrap up particularly well today as strong, icy winds blew off the continent.
