We steamed east for most of today to move closer to the intermittent calls of distant blue whales. Sightings were sparse but included humpback, fin and Antarctic minke whales. The sonobuoys also picked up the ’fighting cats’ calls of killer whales.
While the conditions were reasonable the sighting team was stationed in the observation boxes on the Monkey Bridge. But later, when the wind picked up and blew snow into cold faces, the team retreated to the warmth of the bridge. The bridge has 360o windows so it is still possible to continue observations but the extra height on the Monkey Island is often helpful.
Just recently we’ve picked up louder calls from the blue whales so here’s hoping we are getting closer and the wind drops.
