Woke up to snow on decks and spectacular jade icebergs all round the ship.
Now truly in Antarctic waters with southern fulmars, Antarctic prions, blue petrels and Antarctic petrels circling the ship for most of the day.
The calm waters and clear skies also allowed a great day for sighting whales. We’ve started to see humpback whales in good numbers plus sperm whales and even a couple of fin whales and minke whales raced across in front of the ship.
The passive acoustic team heard lots of sperm whales and some fin whales today but no blue whales. Hopefully this will change over the next few days when we get closer to the ice edge.
Early tomorrow we will be at the Balleny Islands where we will start a formal sightings survey of the whales plus an echosounder survey of the fish and krill.
