All on the ship celebrated crossing the Antarctic Circle today. Those that had not been this far south before kissed Neptune’s fish to mark the occasion.
Otherwise it’s been quiet. We returned to observations on the deck above the bridge as conditions eased but still no sightings of whales. Hopefully it will all get busy once we cross the Antarctic Convergence. Acoustics are not hearing many blue whales but they did pick up humpbacks and blackfish (probably pilot whales). Not too many birds either but it was great to see a light-mantled sooty albatross for the first time this voyage.
Another muster and more safety training today plus we ran simulated sightings of whales to improve our speed and accuracy in data recording. Let’s hope our newly developed skills are employed soon.
The day after tomorrow we should be at the Balleny Islands where we start our humpback and krill surveys.
