Comments

Weather deteriorated throughout the day to nearly 40 knots of wind by mid afternoon. All the waves, swell and white water made spotting whales very difficult and only one possible sei whale was sighted.

Great news from the passive acoustics team. Moving the location of the VHF aerial to the ship’s rear gantry solved both the range and noise issues. We can now receive sound data from the sonobuoys until they dip below the horizon behind us. No blue whales detected since the fix but we hope to hear more after we cross the Antarctic convergence.

We will resume sightings effort and preparations for the humpback survey around the Balleny Island when the weather improves.

All on the team are standing up to the conditions really well.
