Continued steaming south in reasonable conditions although the mist came in and out through the day making whale spotting difficult at times. Air and sea temperature steadily dropping.
More safety meetings and drills plus fire fighting and medical training. These training sessions will continue throughout our transit south.
A few albatrosses, petrels and shearwaters were around the ship most of the day plus sightings of pilot whales and two tricky-to-identify beaked whales. The acoustic team detected a singing blue whale off the east coast of the South Island but now is not the time to deviate from our course south.
The passive acoustics team is wrestling with electronic ship noise overlapping with blue whale calls. They are gradually working through the ship’s instruments to identify the source. Hopefully this can be resolved otherwise it will be difficult to detect the fainter songs of distant whales.
Overall a steady day as we up our skills, find our sea legs and settle into the ship’s routine.
