Comments

Left Wellington today at 0900 NZDT bound for the Balleny Islands near the Ross Sea. There we will conduct a sightings survey of humpback whales. The ship’s echosounders will simultaneously collect data on the density and distribution of krill and fish around these islands.

The blue whale survey will begin once we leave the Ballenys.

Been through several safety briefing and drills. These will continue throughout the transit south.

The first couple of sonobuoys (to listen for blue whales) have been deployed and the observers have started their shift roster on the Monkey Island (deck above the Bridge). Already a few sperm whales have been spotted off the east coast of NZ’s South Island. All good practice for busier, rougher and much colder times ahead.
