As we came into Buckles Bay this morning we saw a very different picture to what has been here the previous two days. Calm water - even at landing beach. Based on our weather forecast we had decided to refuel today and as the forecast had held true we were soon launching into our refuelling procedure. The set up for this operation involved inflatable rubber boats, a LARC and many people rostered in locations on shore and the ship. We use a floating hose to transfer fuel from the ships cargo tanks to the fuel farm ashore. Once connected we pumped air through the hose to ensure that it was ready to pump and then refuelling began. We've almost reached the quantity required by station so will soon commence the packup phase of the operation. Throughout the day the resupply team have also been working hard and have made a dent in the amount of ingoing cargo that we have onboard.
We've been able to move a small amount of cargo by LARC but due the refuelling operation requiring watercraft support the majority of the cargo load today was carried by helicopter. We also deployed all remaining round trip passengers this morning which will keep the range of programs running on the island moving along as planned. Thanks need to go out to all involved today: the crew of the Aurora Australis, the pilots and helicopter engineers and the expeditioners who were tasked for various jobs to support resupply and refuelling. Special mention to our Refuelling Supervisor Brad and his Refuelling Assistant Dan for their professionalism in conducting another successful Macquarie Island refuelling operation. Today was an extremely successful and rewarding day of our resupply.
