Today we completed our final briefings including sessions on field and watercraft safety. Last minute preparations were made and plans (and contingencies) finalised. We arrived at Macquarie Island at around 11:30 local time this morning, but the dark outline of the island was visible from the ship for an hour or so before that and had many out on deck gazing into the distance. We were aware that weather conditions were forecast to deteriorate later in the afternoon so we commenced operations with full awareness that we may not get too much done this afternoon. Conditions were kind to us, the wind stayed down and remained consistent and the swell eased. We were able to blade up 3 of our helicopters and transfer thirty one expeditioners and their baggage ashore. We said goodbye to the ingoing wintering party as they left the ship for their new home for the next year and then sent in our key operational personnel to set up ready for the resupply. We were able to deploy all helicopter support cargo and send our Refuelling Supervisor and his equipment ashore which stands us in good stead to capitalise on the next suitable weather window for refuelling the station.
