We had a busy departure day which commenced with biosecurity checks and baggage weigh in and finished with shipboard briefings and safety drills. As part of travelling to Macquarie Island we are all required to adhere to strict biosecurity protocols to protect the environment on the island. This involves us to undertake washing, vacuuming or disinfecting all clothing and equipment to ensure that no soil or plant material can be transported to the island.
We're now all settling in to the gentle roll of the Aurora Australis as we make our way to Macquarie Island. The weather is being quite kind to us and letting us make a smooth passage so far. Most people are finding their sea legs with only a few pale faces making their way around the vessel, or making the most of laying down in their bunks. Planning for the resupply and refuelling operations is well underway and we have commenced project briefings for people heading ashore.
Many thanks to all at Kingston and the CBC for getting us away.
REGARDS: Nicki and Mike
