We arrived at Davis anchorage yesterday afternoon. The ice in the bay was too thick to put boats in the water.
Because of the need to return to Davis and the additional 5 days added to the voyage we decided to take on extra fuel to ensure we have a good margin for the return.
A 1.4km rope was flown ashore by attaching it to a dead-weight hanging under a helicopter, the rope was then used to pull the fuel hose ashore. Fuel began to flow in earnest at around 01:30 this morning.
Our friend from Davis is now onboard and settled in for the trip home. The hose is being packed up and the last of the team sent ashore to assist in the operations are flying back to the ship.
We hope to depart Davis before dinner tonight.
A huge thanks to all involved both on the ship and ashore, in what has been a massive 36h effort to get the ship refuelled and turned around in an incredibly short time, in bitterly cold, snowy conditions.
Cheers,
Andy and Simon
