Last night we made it to within 3.5nm of the whale mooring.
We were able to 'speak' to it using the special equipment for talking under water with remote equipment (one of those things that goes 'ping'!).
The ice around and over the mooring was very heavy, well packed older floes, visibility was less than 100m at times.
We stopped and waited overnight before trying to reach it again in the morning.
Eventually we managed to get to a position to the south east of the mooring and again managed to ping it thus getting a good fix on it's position from the two contacts, last night and this morning.
We then sent the signal to put the mooring to sleep in the hope that there is enough battery power left and less ice next year.
We are now heading for Davis station to drop off and pick up some cargo and passengers before heading to Hobart.
Cheers,
Andy and Simon
