Yesterday we managed to get in one demersal trawl before the weather deteriorated to the point that the acoustic equipment was loosing data quality from the ships rolling and pitching and all the aerated water passing under the hull.
Whilst the demersal trawl was a success the net took a fair beating from sharp corals and rock on the sea bed. Gerry our science technical support expert along with the First Mate, Bosun and Aurora's IR's spent the next few hours repairing it as the weather picked up.
Currently we are running with the wind to avoid being hammered by the 6-8m seas and 50-60kts wind. This makes for a comfortable (relatively speaking!) ride and significantly reduces the chance of breaking something or someone. It will mean though, that once the seas die down we will have to turn round and steam back to where we started. A price we're more than happy to pay!
Last night we advanced the clocks one hour to bring us to UTC +6.
Cheers,
Andy and Simon
