The first JARE mooring recovery went like a dream. If only they were all so easy. A credit to Yasu and his team who designed and built the unit and the ships crew who manoeuvred the vessel, grappled and pulled the mooring in.

The weather is putting on a good show with clear skies and light winds to bring the best out of the ice and bergs. One jade berg in particularly was pretty special.

Expeditioners did their watercraft briefing covering what to wear and how to get on and off the ship via the pilot ladder from the bunker room door, which can be quite an intimidating experience in grumpy conditions.

We are now steaming the the location of JARE moorings B1 and B2 which will be harder to retrieve as their batteries are likely to have expired and so the acoustic release may not work. If this is the case we will try to lasso them using 900m of wire rope and grapples.

Cheers,

Andy and Simon
