Yesterday afternoon we successfully retrieved mooring P1 after locating it some 4 nautical miles from where we attempted to retrieve it a few days ago. The mooring was pinged then released and recovered with use of the Fast Recovery Craft (FRC). The FRC was boarded by an inquisitive penguin during the operation but it soon jumped ship after it got a glimpse of its shipmates.
The mooring P3 was later in the afternoon confirmed to be either very close to or under an iceberg and with safety being uppermost in our minds a decision was made not to attempt a release and retrieval. A future voyage may have more luck. This completes the mooring retrieval aspect of this voyage. A result of 9 out of 10 successful retrievals is a remarkable effort and a credit to the science and P&O teams and to Mark particularly.
Yesterday evening we moved west to commence a transect north performing a series of deep cast CTD’s. 2 have been completed. We are also looking to trawl for more krill. Whilst travelling west last night we were treated to abundant whale activity in the light of the setting sun.
Cheers
