We reached the Mertz Glacier region yesterday afternoon and commenced mooring retrieval immediately. We have four moorings in total to retrieve in this area, these moorings have been in place for four years and are expected to be difficult to retrieve due to battery life and possible mechanical corrosion. No attempt has been made to retrieve in earlier years due to them being covered by heavy pack ice. Conditions are more favourable this year.
We attempted to retrieve mooring designated P2 first off yesterday evening and whilst the mooring could be communicated with it would not release. After waiting for a release that didn’t come we then moved off and attempted to retrieve the mooring designated P1, this could not be communicated with and could not be released.
This morning we have made our way to a French mooring designated “Albion”. We have carried out 3 CTD operations on route. An attempt to retrieve this mooring will be made this afternoon.
Cheers
Tony & Lloyd
