Mooring T1 was successfully retrieved yesterday afternoon. The retrieval operation was difficult due to the heavy ice conditions in the mooring location. Whilst the ship broke up the ice with great “circle work” again the broken ice was locked in by the heavy pack surrounding it and the mooring was released to surface covered by heavy ice rubble. It took what seemed ages to sight the mooring however once identified the science team and the P&O crew did a great job in bringing it on board dragging the mooring components through heavy chunks of sea ice. This is a 100% result in mooring retrieval in the Totten location. A significant milestone on this voyage and much to the satisfaction of all of us on board.
We have since then commenced another series of CTD operations in good open leads which have opened up to the north west of Polynya. We completed 6 CTD operations in the last 24 hours which makes a total of 51 to date on this marine science phase of the voyage.
Cheers
