All cargo operations were completed at 1730 yesterday at Casey and we departed at 1830. We delivered 500 tonnes of cargo, 850,000 litres of fuel and we backloaded a significant amount of cargo to be returned to Australia such as waste, empty fuel drums and old containerised buildings. It was a great job completed against unpredictable weather conditions. A big thank you to the station crew, watercraft crew and ship’s crew for a job well done completed without incident or injury.

As we head to the Totten Glacier to commence marine science it has been declared Christmas Day on the Aurora Australis. Santa is coming early as the 25th December will be a work day for us. Today there will be a traditional Christmas lunch with the hope that Santa will make an appearance in the afternoon. A space has been cleared on the forward hatches to take an incoming sled. It’s what we have all been dreaming of - a white Christmas.

We are at present in 10/10 pack ice on our way to the Totten Glacier region unable to move forward until ice conditions ease.
