King Neptune and his Queen managed to fit us into his hectic schedule yesterday, and extracted his toll from the 38 first-timers south of the 60th line of latitude. It was a slightly messy affair, but they all emerged relatively unscathed despite a right royal gooping. Hail the King! And Queen! And their extra briny (and slightly scary crew). We all then enjoyed an indoor BBQ (unfortunately there was still a bit too much motion in the ocean last night for an outdoor BBQ on the trawl deck), where we managed to raise $373.05 via gold coin donation (with a few silver ones chucked in for good measure) for Prostate Cancer research. This also happened to coincide with the 21st birthday of our Davis Station refuelling trainee, Flin.

This morning we awoke to the pack-ice, our first penguins and seals, plenty of extra Antarctic Petrels, Snow Petrels, and a Giant Petrel or two. Today all expeditioners will be briefed in how to behave around helicopters, in the hope that we may be using them soon…

All the best, Doug and Dave
