We had another great day of helicopter operations yesterday with 30 flights conducted which resulted in another 24,159Kg of cargo ashore. We also back loaded another 4,866Kg of cargo from Mawson.
This morning we have started helicopter operations again, and today will be our final day of operations. The first flight from the AA saw the last item of Mawson cargo transferred ashore, which means we have been able to fully discharge all Mawson cargo that was loaded to the voyage. We are currently back loading the last RTA cargo from Mawson, as well as bringing back to the ship the remaining ground support personnel that are on station. Once that is complete will conduct an ice reconnaissance, which not only let us determine the condition of the ice we need to get back through, but also pinpoint the best course for the ship to take through this ice.
By mid-afternoon we expect we will have all the helicopters safely stowed in the heli hanger, and the ship will then commence to turn around and start breaking out way out of here so we can get back to Hobart.
I will provide some detailed statistics of what we have achieved over the last nine flying days in tomorrow’s Sitrep, but for now let me just thank everyone who has been involved in this operation for a job well done. It takes a lot of people to make these sorts of things happen, most of whom are working outdoors, doing labour intensive work in very cold conditions. So thanks again to all.
We also wish Robbo and his 2014 wintering team all the best for their upcoming winter. We’ve given you everything we had cargo wise, so we trust now you’ll be able to have safe and productive winter, whilst also having a bit of fun and taking some opportunities to enjoy the fantastic environment you have at your doorstep here. I’m sure Robbo will remember us fondly every time he adds a dash of soy milk to his latte! Hopefully a few of us will be onboard next year when the AA sails into Mawson harbour!
Cheers,
Deepy and Brett
