Yesterday we managed to get 8 ship to shore flights in before weather forced us to shut down helicopter operations. Weather stayed unfavourable for the rest of the day so no further flying occurred.
Today we again having one of those picture perfect Antarctic days and we are full swing into helicopter operations. So far we have had 7 ship to shore flights occur and with a good forecast for the rest of the day we should be able to get many more flights in.
For those that were prepared to get up and brave the cold overnight I’m told there was another very good Aurora over the ship. The clear sunny conditions we have at the moment has brought on some spectacular mirages for us to look at this morning. The type of mirage we are seeing is known as a “fata morgana”, which is a complex mirage in which objects are not only distorted, but elongated vertically as well. Our horizon looks like we have a vast number ice berg “skyscrapers” at the moment when in fact that is not the case. It is easy to see how these types of mirages caused navigation problems for early explorers.
Cheers,
Deepy and Brett
