Yesterday afternoon we capitalised on the weather window available and managed to get 14 ship to shore transfers conducted. These flights were able to transfer ashore another 12,417Kg of cargo. Also, 10 of the 12 remaining returning winterers were transferred back to the AA. It was very nice to catch up with friends we hadn't see for nearly 14 months last night.
Overnight we were treated to a spectacular Aurora Australis. The 'southern lights" put on a great display for us which had the photography buffs onboard gathered up on decks in the cold and capturing the spectacular display.
This morning the helicopters are in the air again with more cargo being flown ashore. The weather is expected to deteriorate today so the flying window we have may only be a small one. That's the joys of working in Antarctica though and you must be ready to capitalise on the good weather when it presents itself.
The last of the 2014 ingoing Mawson wintering team was transferred ashore this morning and we wish Matt a great winter. Thanks for the weather Obs buddy, hope the blue pen get's a work out over winter!
Cheers,
Deepy and Brett
