Yesterday afternoon we launched an ice reconnaissance flight to try and ascertain where the leads were in the pack ice that would take us to where we wanted to be. From the ship we knew they were there, we just couldn't see them. This flight proved to be a great success and just over an hour after the helicopter was shut down, the ship was transiting down a "river" of light grease ice and ice flowers in a large lead that took us all the way to the fast ice edge. As we sailed down our river the mood on the ship was incredibly high, especially for the ingoing Mawson team who after many weeks at sea, started to realise that their sea time would soon be at an end, and and it wouldn't be too much longer before they would be ashore and on station.
So we are now 51nm from Mawson station, which is where we will stay for this fly off operation.
Today we have commenced helicopter operations and all of our four helicopters are now out of the hanger and flying expeditioners ashore to Mawson. We will continue to transfer the support personnel and ingoing Mawson team ashore today, and by this afternoon our focus will shift to cargo operations.
Cheers,
Deepy and Brett
