Comments

As we approached Macquarie Island this morning through rain showers and mist, in a large swell and high winds our hopes of getting operations started today began to sink. Master Stan had us sitting just off the station by the promised 10am but the wind held us up for a few hours as it averaged 30 knots and gusted up to 38. But in true Macquarie Island style the wind and swell dropped and we were able to get IRBs and our LARCs into the water at about 2pm. After that we transferred our wintering expeditioners ashore, and brought a small group of returning expeditioners out to the ship to settle in. We have now commenced our cargo discharge.

By the end of the day the water around us was smooth and the wind was all but gone. We have had penguins playing in the water beside us and numerous birds flying over the ship all afternoon.

Cheers, Nicki and Sharon
