Both engines have been running today to get ahead of a weather system that will chase and then pass us later in the week. It allows us to not only avoid the large seas and rough weather, but to stay on schedule for arrival in Hobart on Saturday.
A large albatross, perhaps a Wandering or Royal, followed the ship for a lengthy period this morning whilst the regulars walked a few laps of the helideck. During routine inspections crew found a White Faced Petrel on the foredeck. The Petrel was successfully released shortly afterwards – it was likely to have been disorientated last night by the ship’s lights.
Dinner was a traditional Sunday roast – lamb or chicken with vegetables. Another great effort from the team in the galley. Those that stayed up late were treated to an Aurora Australis. Although the weather is closing in no doubt there will be a few more expeditioners up on the bridge tonight – apologies to the Officer of the Watch if there’s a crowd!
There is a tradition on most voyages to run an auction to raise funds for Camp Quality. This will probably take place on Thursday evening in conjunction with the last of our special occasions. Expeditioners and crew alike are busy putting their creative talents to use making things for the auction.
Kiwi Helicopter Resources pilot Bryan Patterson would like to wish his daughter Gemma a happy birthday. Bryan has flown at Macquarie Island and for Japan’s Antarctic program. He’s looking forward to a few more hours in the air on the next voyage carrying out the helicopter based resupply of Mawson.
Cheers, Andy, Brett, Dave and James
