We entered the band of pack ice surrounding Davis yesterday afternoon
and are now steadily transiting through it. Davis, the Riviera of the
South, has so far lived up to expectations with yesterday bringing clear
skies, light winds and a fantastic sunset. The photographers amongst us
have been busy.
A number of Southern Right Whales were seen as we approached the pack
ice yesterday with Adelie and Emperor Penguins again providing the main
highlight since entering the ice.
The draft Concept of Operations document covering how we will carry out
activities at Davis has been circulated ahead of our anticipated arrival
on Friday or Saturday; final timing will be determined by the ice
conditions ahead.
One of the main tasks at Davis includes retrieving over 40 summer
expeditioners and inserting three winterers; those remaining on board
are preparing for a reshuffle of cabins after expeditioner numbers on
board nearly double in a few days time.
The standard of field training being provided on board has reached a new
high, and Steve Rado’s presentation last night on the UN’s roles in
providing food relief in Pakistan has got many thinking about how they
might apply themselves to humanitarian work in the Antarctic off-season.
Cheers, Andy, Brett, Dave and James.
