Yesterday evening saw the successful deployment of an acoustic whale
recorder from the trawl deck of the ship by the crew accompanied by Tom
Luttrell, the chief communications officer. This recorder, one of a
number deployed as part of a long term international project will
provide valuable information on population abundance, trend, structure
and distribution of the endangered Antarctic blue whale.

Other onboard scientific activities are continuing as planned and Hobart
has reported that all eight ARGO floats are responding.

This morning the sky has cleared and many have enjoyed the spectacle of
sun illuminating the blue ice of the passing bergs. Trainings have
continued with the ingoing Mawson and Davis personnel receiving
instruction on first aid from the ship’s doctor, James Chappell. Rope
systems training with field training officer Heidi Godfrey is scheduled
for this afternoon.

Feature films and presentations are continuing each evening. Tonight we
look forward to a talk by the plant operator Steve Rado on humanitarian
operations in Pakistan - Steve being one of three expeditioners onboard
to have worked there for the UN in recent years.

Planning continues for the Davis resupply with ongoing development of
the concept of operations plan.

Cheers, Andy, Brett, Dave and James.
