Planning commenced for our expected arrival at Davis later in the week
with the first telephone hook-up between ship and station. Timing of our
arrival will be determined by the pack ice conditions ahead. The
intention is to use the watercraft aboard for the required personal and
cargo movements and keep the helicopters in the hangar.
Last night, perhaps fortuitously, it was a pilot that came out on top of
the paper plane competition despite the best efforts of the watercraft
operators to sabotage affairs with a remote control helicopter!
During the day expeditioners have been expertly guided by Heidi Godfrey,
the ingoing Mawson Field Training Officer, on sessions covering rope
work, weather and sea ice; all areas where skills are vital to their
safety when venturing away from station.
The last of the four ARGO floats to be deployed on this leg of trip was
released this morning, and preparation is underway for deployment this
evening of a sophisticated ‘whale’ mooring that will provide data on
whale movements.
Cheers, Andy, Brett, Dave and James.
