Yesterday evening, expeditioners were treated to Dave Mac’s renowned
presentation “The Weasels I have known”. Tracing the story of the fleet
of Weasel tracked vehicles and the men who operated them, Dave took us
on a journey highlighting some of the many instances of innovation,
adaptation and resilience that has characterised the early years of
ANARE. More than one of the ingoing Mawson crew left the presentation
with thoughts of that first Weasel still sleeping beneath the snow.

This morning, a routine safety round of the ship was conducted by the
crew to identify and address any outstanding hazards. This was shortly
followed by a muster, postponed due to yesterday’s large seas. Gathered
out on a snowy heli-pad in full survival wear, the expeditioners
attended to the safety briefs against a backdrop of passing ice bergs,
stark against the cold grey sea.

Trainings for the ingoing Mawson and Davis expeditioners have been
conducted on weather and an introduction to field trip leadership. This
afternoon the schedule lightens with surfing flicks followed in the
early evening by a paper plane construction and testing session. Rotary
pilots and crew are invited ‘so they can see the error of their ways’.

On the bridge, those present caught a fleeting glimpse of a humpback
whale. Also on the bridge, Stoney our MET technician brought our
attention to the barograph which had bottomed out at approximately
0100hs this morning, indicating that overnight the ship had passed close
to the low pressure system that had caused the blizzard conditions of
yesterday. Stoney also conveys compliments to the galley for the
excellent banana bread served for morning tea.

Cheers, Andy, Brett, Dave and Jame
