We pulled into the anchorage at Casey around 0630 with a light breeze and grey skies. The barge was craned over the side around 0830 and resupply operations were underway shortly after. The first load ashore was the priority 20 foot refrigerated (reefer) container with fresh food for the station. As with many aspects of the voyage the resupply operation is a combined effort involving teamwork between the P&O crew and AAD personnel.

As well as the barge one or two Inflatable Rubber Boats (IRBs) have been in the water to provide search and rescue cover. When free from these duties the boats have taken priority personnel ashore to carry out their work taskings, which cover a range of IT, meteorological and scientific projects, or for a brief familiarisation with the station layout and operations.

Yesterday evening on our approach to Casey the ship entered a relatively thick band of broken sea ice. This provided the first real encounter for many with the extensive wildlife that abounds in Antarctica, as well as requiring an occasional change of course to avoid a scatter of icebergs mixed in with the sea ice. Killer whales, Sooty Albatross, Antarctic Petrels as well as Adelie and Emperor Penguins were amongst the most common sightings.

Adelie Penguins huddled in groups on ice floes took to the water as the ship approached and could still be seen well below the surface through the crystal clear waters. Resplendent in their evening attire many could be seen momentarily pausing for a double take at Steve Robinson on the monkey deck donned in shorts and star covered knee high compression socks.

Whilst it was overcast the long sunset brought out a contrast between the turquoise blue accents in the ice and an eerie golden hue in the sky
- something I'm sure our first time expeditioners won't forget.

Lastly, whilst it’s been a busy 24 hours for many all want to wish Lydia's mum, Mandy Dee, a happy 60th birthday!

Cheers Andy, Brett, Dave, James
