Calm and sunny conditions today sees many activities aboard the Aurora Australis.

Along with regular sea and air sampling, the deployment of ARGO floats continued today. A component of the Southern Ocean observation system, these floats will collect data to inform scientific understandings of the role of the Southern Ocean in climate change processes. In the krill storage rooms, refrigeration systems are being tested in preparation of arrival at Casey.

A meeting is scheduled this afternoon for all Mawson expeditioners, the first opportunity to regroup as a team now that virtually all have found their sea-legs. Educational lectures and film screenings are continuing each afternoon and evening with classes held today on radio communications and calculating directional loads for rope rescue systems. Now a regular feature on the ship’s schedule is voluntary physical training sessions, this afternoon to be hosted on the heli-deck making good use of the ideal conditions.

This morning, focal persons identified in the critical incident management plan attended a comprehensive hazard identification tour of the Aurora Australis as conducted by the ship’s crew.

Also this morning, a meeting was chaired by the voyage leader to finalise the concept of operations [CON-OPS] for the resupply of Casey Station. Planning with the watercraft operators for barge operations between the ship and Casey is continuing.

Finally, Dave Pinch wishes to commend the galley staff for yesterday’s sumptuous oysters.

Cheers,

Andy, Brett, Dave, James
