We remain nominally in our present position awaiting some change in the ice. We have over the last 24 hours moved slightly to take advantage of small areas of open water (puddles) which have appeared which would make us better positioned for any pack ice change. Whilst we are only 60 miles from the marginal ice zone it is a significant distance in terms of ship travel owing to the condition of the ice from here to that zone.
The Aurora Australis Bosun Joe was to have been going on a camping trip to Coffs Harbour and would have been there now if not for our position out here in the ice. To ensure Joe knows what he is missing his so called crew mates have built a replica campsite on the trawl deck to remind him of where he could have been every time he walks passed it. The “campsite” is being enhanced on a daily basis. With mates like these who needs enemies. We detected tears of joy from Joe yesterday but then again we could have been mistaken.
Kerryn has initiated a couple of good competitions. The first one is a photo competition which is always popular, there will be various categories. The second competition is for the best suggestion for getting us out of the ice. Expecting some weird and wacky proposals for that challenge.
Cheers Tony and Mike
