Yesterday afternoon we completed an ice recce by Basler aircraft from Davis and found the area north west of the ship was completely closed by ice however to the north east some leads were identified. At 1500 yesterday afternoon we proceeded at a bearing of 045 degrees and continued to 2200 where we stopped for the night. This morning we have continued our progress on that course albeit very slowly in some very tough ice conditions. It has been great to be on the move again and we are grateful to the guys at Davis for organising and executing the recce for us.
Yesterday after the weekly practice emergency muster a demonstration was given by first officer Gerry of various pyrotechnic type safety devices on board including rocket launched rope for man over board assistance and various types of flares for attracting ships and aircraft. A good opportunity for expeditioners to get hands on experience of these devices..

Cheers Tony and Mike
