Yesterday evening the ship was stopped due to heavy ice conditions and has remained stationary until we have carried out an ice recce with both the helicopters and the Basler aircraft from Davis. We completed the ice recce this morning and the next stage of our journey through this unbelievably thick pack ice will be planned when all the information from the recce is to hand
The expeditioners on board remain busy with some field training still happening thanks to Simon and Anthea. Planning for the Melbourne Cup is underway; Stuart is endeavouring to get a live calling of the race. They say it’s the race that stops a nation and it will surely stop the Aurora Australis although the ice is doing a good job of that on its own.
Last night Barb gave a presentation on the work she has been doing on identification of potential skiways for landing aircraft in Antarctica. This was very much appreciated by all who attended. This afternoon there is another quiz happening and teams will be trying their best to beat the unbeaten “oldies” that epitomise the saying “old age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill”. Cecelia starts her Spanish lessons today and the class is fully subscribed.
Cheers Tony and Mike
